The name "Fuxin" (阜新) literally means "New Prosperity at the Fu River" (fu = abundance/prosperity, xin = new). The city developed as a major coal mining center during the Japanese occupation of Manchuria (1930s-1945) when extensive coal deposits were exploited. After 1949, Fuxin became one of the "Four Great Coal Bases" (四大煤炭基地) of China - supplying fuel to power plants and industry across Northeast China for decades.
