Huanggang (黄冈) — "Yellow Ridge" — is a city in eastern Hubei Province, on the south bank of the Yangtze River directly opposite Wuhan. Huanggang is famous as the place where the great Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo (Su Shi, 苏东坡, 1037–1101) was exiled in 1079–1080 and wrote his two immortal Red Cliff Rhapsodies (赤壁赋) — among the greatest works of Chinese literature. It is also the home of China's most famous high school examination system and the gateway to the Dabie Mountains (大别山).
Huanggang's most significant cultural claim is its connection to Su Dongpo (Su Shi, 苏东坡, 1037–1101) — one of the greatest poets, essayists, painters, and calligraphers in Chinese history. In 1079, Su Dongpo was arrested by the Song Emperor's officials on a politically motivated charge, convicted, and exiled to Huangzhou (黄州) — the area that is now Huanggang's Huangzhou District. This was the lowest point of Su Dongpo's official career, but it was in Huangzhou that he produced some of the most celebrated works in all of Chinese literature.
In 1082, while walking by the Red Cliff (赤壁) — a red cliff on the Yangtze River north of Huanggang — Su Dongpo composed the Former Red Cliff Rhapsody (前赤壁赋) and, shortly after, the Latter Red Cliff Rhapsody (后赤壁赋). These two prose poems — evoking the beauty of the river, the moon, the immortals, and the transience of human life — are among the most beloved works in the Chinese literary canon. Su Dongpo also wrote many of his most famous ci lyrics and poems during the Huangzhou exile, as well as developing the famous Dongpo Pork (东坡肉) dish that bears his name.
The name Huanggang (黄冈) — "Yellow Ridge" — comes from the Huanggang Mountains (黄岗山), a ridge of hills in the northern part of the city area. The character 冈 means ridge or mountain crest. The name dates to the Sui Dynasty (581–618 CE), when the area was organized as a prefecture called Huangzhou (黄州), later evolving into the modern city of Huanggang.
The northern part of Huanggang Prefecture borders the Dabie Mountains (大别山) — one of China's most important revolutionary base areas. During the Chinese Revolutionary War (1927–1949), the Dabie Mountains were the site of intense guerrilla warfare between Communist forces under Liu Zhijiun, Xu Xiangqian, and others, and the Nationalist armies. The mountain area — with its remote valleys, caves, and peasant communities — provided ideal conditions for revolutionary base areas. Today, the Dabie Mountains are a scenic ecological zone with summer retreats, hot springs, and mountain hiking.
The Dabie Mountains also form a significant geographical boundary — they separate the Yangtze River basin from the Huai River basin, and mark the transition between the plains of central China and the mountainous south. The highest peak in the Dabie range is Mount Tianzhu (天柱山, 1,788m) in Anhui Province.
Huanggang is located in eastern Hubei Province, on the south bank of the Yangtze River directly opposite Wuhan.
