Government and charter vessels also operate from Wenchang (文昌) on Hainan east coast. Once on Yongxing Island, a local guide or your accommodation can arrange a tour of the island including the South China Sea Museum, the fishing port, the Paracel Islands Martyrs Cemetery, and the island perimeter. The island is small enough to walk or cycle around.
Sansha is only accessible by boat from Hainan Island - no airport on the islands.
Fly to Hainan Island first
Book a flight to either Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) or Haikou Meilan International Airport (HKK). Sanya is closer to the boat departure port - the drive to the Sanya ferry terminal is only 30 minutes. Haikou has more flight options and a 1.5-hour drive to Wenchang port.
Boat journey: Sanya 15-18h / Wenchang 12-14h
The passenger ferry (琼沙3号) operates from Sanya and Wenchang ports to Yongxing Island. Tickets must be booked in advance through official channels - the boat is popular and often fully booked weeks ahead. The journey takes 15-18 hours from Sanya and 12-14 hours from Wenchang. Cabin class is recommended for the overnight journey.
15 km to Sanya ferry port - 30 min by road
SYX serves domestic flights and some international routes. Closer to the Sanya ferry terminal for boats to Yongxing Island. Less flight options than Haikou but convenient. Our driver meets you at the airport and transfers you directly to the ferry port.
90 km to Wenchang port - 1.5 hours by road

The lagoon surrounding Yongxing Island has exceptionally clear water with coral formations visible from the surface. On calm days the turquoise lagoon is most beautiful. Aerial photography (if permitted) captures the full island lagoon system best. Snorkeling provides the closest view of the coral gardens.

North Reef (七连屿) has vast areas of reef exposed at low tide - creating extraordinary tidal pools filled with sea life. The white sand bars between the reef sections are most visible at low tide. The bird sanctuary islands are covered in sea birds - visible from the boat approach.

The South China Sea sunset from Yongxing Island is dramatic - the sky and sea turn orange and gold with no land in any direction to interrupt the view. The palm trees on the island make excellent silhouettes. Best viewed from the north side of the island facing the open sea.

The fishing port at Yongxing Island is most active in the early morning when the overnight fishing boats unload their catch. The display of tropical fish, lobster, and sea cucumber is colorful and unique to this frontier port. The surrounding fishing boats and port activity make good subjects.
Best in the morning
The Xisha Islands coral reefs are best snorkeled in the morning when the water is calmest and visibility is highest (30+ meters). The coral gardens near Yongxing Island have brain coral, table coral, and anemones with clownfish. Bring an underwater camera - the marine life is extraordinary.
Best in quiet morning
The Paracel Islands Martyrs Cemetery (琛航岛) is a solemn and photogenic site. The neat rows of graves against the tropical island background create a striking image. The site is best visited early in the morning when it is quiet and the light is soft.
