A historic copper-mining city on the south bank of the Yangtze River in Southern Anhui - known as "China Copper Capital," surrounded by mountains and lakes, and gateway to Huangshan (Yellow Mountain).
The name "Tongling" (铜陵) literally means "Copper Mound" or "Copper Hill" - named for the copper deposits and copper mining that has sustained the city for over 3,000 years. According to historical records, the city supplied copper for the legendary Jiufeng Nine Tripod Cauldrons (九鼎) of the Xia Dynasty over 4,000 years ago. The city is called "China Copper Capital" (中国铜都) today - one of the largest copper production and processing centers in China.
Tongling has a rich heritage in bronze casting and metalworking. The city has been producing bronze artifacts since the Shang and Zhou dynasties - some of the most sophisticated bronze work in Chinese history came from this region. The modern city is also known for its copper art and sculpture - large bronze sculptures of workers and industrial scenes dot the city. Tongling is also famous for its Tianjing (天井) town - a beautiful historic water town with canals, bridges, and traditional architecture.
Tongling does not have its own airport. The nearest major airport is Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG), about 130 km away - approximately 1.5 hours by road. Hefei Xinqiao International Airport (HFE) is about 180 km away (2 hours). Tongling is served by the Nanjing-Jiujiang Railway (宁九铁路) with frequent trains to Nanjing (45 minutes), Hefei (1.5 hours), Shanghai (3 hours), and Jiujiang (1.5 hours). The G3 Beijing-Taipei Expressway and G50 Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway pass through Tongling.
Tongling is located in Southern Anhui Province, on the south bank of the Yangtze River where it is joined by the Qingyi River (青弋江). The city is surrounded by mountains and lakes - the landscape is hilly and green, unlike the plains of Northern Anhui. The Yangtze River forms the northern boundary of the city. The climate is subtropical monsoon - hot humid summers and cool winters. The city is about 100 km from Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) - a 1.5-hour drive making Tongling a popular stop for Huangshan visitors.

Tongling has no airport. Your driver meets you at Nanjing Lukou Airport (NKG) arrival hall and drives you directly to your Tongling hotel. The most comfortable option for the 1.5-hour journey.

NKG is the primary airport serving Tongling visitors. It has flights across China and international routes. The drive from NKG to Tongling takes about 1.5 hours via the G3/G50 expressways. Our private car is the most comfortable option for this journey.
180 km to Tongling - 2 hours by road
HFE is a larger airport with more flight options, particularly for domestic routes. If NKG does not serve your route, the drive from Hefei to Tongling takes about 2 hours. Useful as an alternative for flights not available at Nanjing.

On the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail corridor (via Nanjing). Useful for connections to Beijing (4 hours), Shanghai (2.5 hours), and Jinan. About 12 km from the city center.

Best after dark
The bronze sculptures of industrial workers around Shikong Lake are dramatically lit at night with colored lights. The reflections of the sculptures in the lake water create compelling photographs. The lakeside promenade is most atmospheric after 8 PM when the city quiets down.
Best at dawn
Tianjing Water Town at dawn, when mist rises from the canals and the morning light filters through the traditional architecture, is one of the most atmospheric water town scenes in Anhui. Arrive at opening time before the day-trippers to have the canals largely to yourself.
Best at golden hour
The Yangtze River near Tongling is broad and busy with cargo traffic. The riverside promenade at the Jiangnan Change Daily scenic area offers views of the river at sunset. The contrast of the river, distant mountains, and cargo vessels creates dynamic compositions.
Best with museum opening
The Tongling Copper Museum has a collection of ancient bronze artifacts including vessels, weapons, and ritual objects from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The exhibits are beautifully displayed and the museum architecture is itself striking. Photography is permitted in most areas.
Best October-November
The Daying River valley near Tongling shows vibrant autumn colors in October and November - the hillsides turn orange, red, and gold. The hiking paths along the river offer opportunities for landscape photography with the river and traditional village backdrop.
Best at dusk
The Yangtze riverfront at the Jiangnan Change Daily scenic area has a distinctive industrial-meets-natural character. The blue hour after sunset, when the sky turns deep blue and the city lights start to appear, creates atmospheric urban landscape photographs with the river and distant mountains.
A specialty of Tongling - duck braised in soy sauce and spices until the meat is tender and flavorful. The dish has a distinctive coppery-red color from the braising liquid. Best at local restaurants in the old city area near the lake.
Fresh fish from the Yangtze River or local lakes steamed with ginger, scallion, and light soy sauce. Southern Anhui cuisine favors fresh ingredients and delicate cooking. The fish is often served live from the tank at waterside restaurants.
Tianjing is known for its hand-made tofu - fresh tofu made using traditional methods from local soybeans. The tofu has a delicate texture and fresh flavor. Try it at breakfast shops in the water town or at local restaurants.
Though associated with Wenzhou, steamed pork dumplings (小笼包) are popular throughout Anhui and the Tongling area has excellent versions. The thin-skinned dumplings are filled with juicy pork and served in a small bamboo basket. A beloved breakfast item.
Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) produces one of China most famous green teas - Huangshan Maofeng (黄山毛峰). The tea is grown in the misty mountain environment and has a distinctive fresh, slightly sweet flavor. Available at tea shops throughout Tongling.
The main pedestrian shopping street near Shikong Lake has a mix of local brands, chain stores, and regional products. Good for everyday shopping and a glimpse of Tongling urban life. Evening is the most lively time.
The small souvenir shops in Tianjing Water Town sell local crafts, hand-made paper products, and traditional snacks. The shops are more authentic and less tourist-oriented than those in the famous water towns. Good for finding unique regional items.

Tongling has no airport. The 130 km drive from Nanjing (NKG) to Tongling takes 1.5 hours. Booking 24 hours ahead ensures your driver is ready at the airport when you land. Last-minute bookings may not have availability for the Tongling route.
Tianjing Water Town is an authentic working town - most tourists arrive after 9 AM. Visit at opening time (usually 8 AM) to experience the canals without crowds, see the morning routine of local residents, and photograph the mist rising from the water. Your driver can pick you up at your hotel at 7 AM.
The best Tongling Copper Duck (铜陵酱鸭) is served at small restaurants on the north side of Shikong Lake. Look for the restaurants with the most local customers - the duck is braised fresh each day and the portions are generous.
The Tongling Copper Museum gift shop has the best quality copper products - well-made, properly priced, and with clear provenance. Avoid the tourist shops near the highway exits which often sell imported copper items at inflated prices.
If you are visiting Huangshan as a day trip from Tongling, leave by 6 AM so you arrive at the mountain around 7:30 AM - before the tour groups. This gives you several hours to see the key sights before starting the drive back. The summit views are clearest in the morning.
The Shikong Lake promenade is most atmospheric at night when the bronze sculptures are dramatically lit and the city quiets down. An evening walk around the lake (about 30 minutes) is a pleasant way to end the day and offers excellent night photography opportunities.
