The name "Pingliang" (平凉) means "Peaceful Coolness" (ping = peaceful/flat, liang = cool) - referring to the highland climate at the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau. Historically known as Gonghe (耿赉) and later Anxi (安西) during the Tang Dynasty, Pingliang has been an important military garrison and Silk Road trading post for over 1,600 years as the gateway between the Central Plains and the western frontier.
Pingliang sits at the intersection of Buddhist, Taoist, and Hui Muslim cultural traditions. The city is best known for Kongtong Temple (崆峒山) - one of the Twelve Sacred Taoist Mountains of China (道教十二洞天) and a center of Taoist martial arts and philosophy. Pingliang is located in eastern Gansu Province, on the southern edge of the Loess Plateau where it meets the Qinling Mountains.
